Financial Assistance for Rare Disease
The government has announced financial aid of up to ₹50 lakh for patients suffering from rare diseases under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD). This policy covers 63 identified rare diseases, including genetic disorders, degenerative diseases, and rare cancers. India accounts for nearly one-third of global rare disease cases, affecting 8-10 crore people. However, challenges such as a lack of standardized definitions, prolonged diagnosis periods, and limited funding persist. The National Consortium for Research and Development on Therapeutics for Rare Diseases (NCRDTRD) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are working to improve research and indigenous drug development to combat these conditions.
e-NAM to be Upgraded to Address Logistical Challenges
The government is set to launch e-NAM 2.0, upgrading the National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) to address inter-state trade and logistical challenges. Launched in 2016, e-NAM currently integrates 1,361 mandis across 23 states and has facilitated transactions worth ₹2.79 lakh crore. However, farmers still face challenges such as logistical inefficiencies, limited storage facilities, and digital literacy issues. The upgraded platform will feature AI-driven price discovery, real-time logistics tracking, expanded warehousing options, and a unified tax framework to promote seamless inter-state trade.
India’s Gold Investments Surge 60% to ₹1.5 Lakh Crore in 2024
According to the World Gold Council (WGC), India’s gold investment demand surged 60% in 2024, reaching ₹1.5 lakh crore ($18 billion). The demand, which stood at 239 tonnes, marks the highest level since 2013. This growth is attributed to rising gold prices, economic volatility, and increased urban investment trends. Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and e-commerce platforms facilitating digital gold purchases have contributed to the spike. However, the rise in gold imports could widen the Current Account Deficit (CAD) and impact India’s foreign exchange reserves.
Facial Recognition System (FRS)
The Maharashtra government has introduced Facial Recognition System (FRS) for secure entry into Mantralaya, enhancing surveillance and efficiency. FRS relies on artificial intelligence, computer vision, and biometric analysis to verify identities. While FRS has applications in law enforcement, banking, and healthcare, concerns over privacy violations, data security risks, and AI bias persist. Legal experts recommend strong regulatory frameworks to prevent misuse.

India has surpassed 100 GW of installed solar capacity, positioning itself as a global leader in solar energy. Over the past decade, India’s solar capacity has grown 35 times, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. Key contributing states include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Government initiatives such as the National Solar Mission, PM-KUSUM Scheme, and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme have played a crucial role in this achievement. Despite this progress, land acquisition, grid integration, and energy storage remain challenges in India’s renewable energy sector.
Informing Accused of Grounds of Arrest: A Constitutional Requirement
The Supreme Court has reaffirmed that informing an accused of the grounds of arrest is a fundamental right under Article 22 of the Indian Constitution.
