Consolidation of Regional Rural Banks in India
The Indian government has initiated a new phase of consolidating Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) under the “One State-One RRB” strategy. This move aims to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency by merging existing RRBs across various states. The consolidation will reduce the number of RRBs from 43 to 28, enabling them to better serve rural communities by expanding their capital base and adopting modern banking technologies
.Key Benefits:
- Enhanced operational efficiency
- Stronger capital base
- Broader reach to rural areas
However, challenges such as regional disparities and workforce restructuring remain concerns that need to be addressed during implementation.
Equity Infusion for Food Corporation of India
The Union Cabinet approved an equity infusion of ₹10,700 crore for the Food Corporation of India (FCI). This financial boost aims to reduce FCI’s dependence on borrowing and lower its interest burden. - High operational costs
- Limited storage infrastructure
- Over-reliance on rice and wheat procurement
This equity infusion is expected to modernize FCI’s operations and reduce wastage in food storage and distribution.
RNA Editing: A New Frontier in Genetic Medicine
RNA editing is emerging as a promising alternative to DNA editing, offering temporary changes that can correct genetic errors without permanent alterations. Recent clinical trials have shown success in treating Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), a genetic disorder affecting the liver and lungs
.Advantages over DNA Editing:
- Temporary changes reduce long-term risks
- Uses naturally occurring enzymes, lowering immune response risks
While RNA editing holds great potential, challenges such as specificity and delivery mechanisms need further refinement.
Eco-Sensitive Areas (ESA) in the Western Ghats
The Union Government has issued a draft notification designating over 56,800 square kilometers of the Western Ghats as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA). This move aims to protect biodiversity by restricting activities like mining and large-scale construction in these regions
Why It Matters:
- The Western Ghats are one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
- They provide critical water resources for millions in peninsular India.
However, state governments have expressed concerns about how these restrictions might affect local development projects.
