Shifting of Earth’s Magnetic North Pole

Recent scientific studies have revealed that Earth’s magnetic north pole is shifting rapidly towards Siberia, moving away from Canada’s Arctic region. The World Magnetic Model (WMM), which tracks geomagnetic variations, confirms that the pole has moved over 400 km in the last century. The molten iron and nickel movements in Earth’s outer core, along with geomagnetic anomalies, are the primary causes of this shift. Scientists warn that this could impact navigation systems, migratory patterns of animals, and satellite communications. The possibility of a geomagnetic reversal, where Earth’s north and south poles switch places, remains a long-term concern, though it has historically occurred once every 200,000 to 300,000 years.

US Suspends Foreign Aid

The United States has announced a suspension of foreign aid under a new executive order by former President Donald Trump. The decision is part of the “America First” agenda, which prioritizes domestic financial stability over international aid commitments. The US has historically been one of the largest donors, allocating $45 billion in 2023 alone across 158 countries. The suspension is expected to significantly impact countries in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America, which rely heavily on US aid for economic development, disaster relief, and military assistance. Analysts predict that China and Russia may expand their influence in these regions by filling the aid gap.

Lateral Entry in Civil Services

The Indian government’s lateral entry scheme, which allows professionals from private sectors, academia, and PSUs to be recruited into mid- and senior-level bureaucratic roles, has faced opposition. Since its introduction in 2018, 63 appointments have been made. While the scheme aims to bring in domain expertise and efficiency, critics argue that it bypasses the UPSC recruitment process, lacks transparency, and does not follow reservation policies. The Baswan Committee (2016) had recommended reforms to address personnel shortages, but concerns remain regarding potential conflict of interest and short tenures for lateral entrants.

India – Oman FTA Agreement Talks

India and Oman have resumed negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to strengthen trade, investment, and defense cooperation. Oman is India’s 30th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $8.9 billion in FY 2023-24. The FTA talks include reducing tariffs on goods, easing service norms, and enhancing technology transfers. Oman is strategically significant for India due to its location near the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil shipments pass. Defense collaborations include joint military exercises (Al Najah, Eastern Bridge, Naseem Al Bahr) and India’s access to Oman’s Duqm Port.

External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) Landscape

A recent State Bank of India (SBI) report highlights the growing role of External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) as a key funding source for Indian companies. ECBs allow Indian corporations to raise capital from international lenders at lower interest rates compared to domestic borrowing. The total outstanding ECBs stood at $190.4 billion as of September 2024, with 63% held by private-sector companies. While ECBs provide liquidity for infrastructure, exports, and technology upgrades, concerns remain regarding exchange rate risks, regulatory restrictions, and reliance on external funding.

Lezim

Lezim, a traditional folk dance of Maharashtra, has gained attention after being featured in the Bollywood film ‘Chhaava’. The dance involves synchronized movements with small cymbals attached to wooden sticks, originally used for martial training by Maratha warriors. Today, Lezim is prominently performed during Ganesh Chaturthi processions.

Lala Lajpat Rai

India commemorated the 160th birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, a key figure in the freedom struggle and the Lal-Bal-Pal trio. Known as ‘Punjab Kesari’, he was instrumental in the Swadeshi movement, establishment of Punjab National Bank, and protests against the Simon Commission (1928). He succumbed to injuries from a British police lathi charge during the protest, inspiring Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries.

Lake Victoria

Scientists have conducted a genetic survey of cyanobacteria in Kenya’s Winam Gulf (Lake Victoria), highlighting the rising threat of toxic algal blooms. Lake Victoria is the largest tropical lake in the world, supporting millions of people in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The increasing presence of harmful cyanobacteria is linked to pollution, climate change, and overfishing, threatening aquatic biodiversity and local fisheries.

Tidal Flooding

Kerala’s Ernakulam district is witnessing frequent tidal flooding, also known as “nuisance flooding”, caused by rising sea levels and changing ocean currents. Such flooding damages infrastructure, disrupts daily life, and accelerates coastal erosion. Scientists warn that climate change will make tidal flooding a regular phenomenon in low-lying coastal cities, requiring better urban planning and flood defense systems.

Unified Pension Scheme

The Finance Ministry has introduced the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which guarantees 50% of the average last 12-month salary as pension for government employees who opt in. Unlike the National Pension System (NPS), which does not provide guaranteed benefits, UPS ensures a minimum pension of ₹10,000 per month for employees with at least 10 years of service. Employees can choose between NPS and UPS, but cannot switch once opted in.

Piezoelectricity

Researchers at IIT Kanpur have highlighted the importance of piezoelectric materials in devices such as stove lighters and energy-harvesting sensors. Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain materials (quartz, ceramics) to generate electric charges when subjected to mechanical stress. It is used in medical imaging (ultrasound), pressure sensors, and power generation for small electronics.
