Earliest Evidence of Iron Use in Tamil Nadu
A groundbreaking study titled ‘Antiquity of Iron: Recent Radiometric Dates from Tamil Nadu’ has revealed evidence of iron technology in Tamil Nadu dating back to 3345 BCE, challenging previous notions about the origins of the Iron Age. The discovery at the Sivagalai site suggests that early civilizations in Tamil Nadu had already developed advanced iron-smelting techniques before many other regions of the world. The findings also highlight the significance of iron-based tools in agriculture, trade, and military advancements, reshaping our understanding of South India’s metallurgical progress. The study further emphasizes the importance of Megalithic culture in India’s Iron Age, with key sites like Hallur (Karnataka) and Adichanallur (Tamil Nadu) demonstrating early use of iron. Dating techniques such as Radiometric Dating, AMS, and OSL have confirmed these findings, adding new dimensions to Indian archaeology.
