Irregularities in the Saubhagya Scheme
The Meghalaya Lokayukta has summoned former officials of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited regarding alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Saubhagya scheme. Launched in October 2017, this scheme aims to achieve universal household electrification by providing free electricity connections to rural and poor urban households, with special provisions for remote areas using solar systems.

A) Meghalaya Lokayukta Chairperson Bhalang Dhar, in an order, acknowledged receiving the complaint dated June 12 under Section 13 (1) (a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
B) Dhar noted that the allegations were based solely on the CAG report submitted to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
C) The matter was filed based on the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Social and Economic Sectors for the year ended 31 March 2022.
First case of Oropouche Fever in Italy02 JUL 2024

Italy recently reported its first case of Oropouche fever, a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease caused by the Oropouche Virus (OROV). Discovered in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955, it has symptoms like fever and headache and can cause severe conditions like meningitis. No specific treatment or vaccine exists.

A) Oropouche fever results from the Oropouche virus, primarily spread through the bite of the Culicoides paraensis midge.
B) There is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the disease.

AI System Launched in Pench Tiger Reserve for Detection of Forest Fires
Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra has deployed Pantera, an AI-powered forest fire detection system. It uses a high-resolution camera and satellite data to provide real-time alerts, distinguish between smoke and clouds, and predict potential fires. This initiative is a collaboration between multiple organisations and is expected to significantly enhance fire management and protect the reserve’s ecosystem.

Five soldiers swept away in Shyok River02 JUL 2024
Five Army personnel died during a training exercise in eastern Ladakh when their tank got stuck in the Shyok River due to high currents and rising water levels. Despite efforts to rescue, the strong currents hindered all attempts. The Shyok River, originating from the Rimo Glacier in Ladakh, is a tributary of the Indus River. The river journeys southeastward, then alters its course towards the northwest, ultimately merging with the Indus River in Pakistan.

Key Points:
A) Confirming the loss of lives the Army said that the incident took place on 28 Jun 2024 night, while deinducting from a military training activity.
B) This is the second biggest incident in which soldiers were killed in action.
C) In the first such incident of the loss of lives, the Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army soldiers were killed in clashes in June 2020 at Galwan.
Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise
INS Shivalik of the Indian Navy has arrived at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, to take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, which is recognized as the largest international maritime exercise globally. RIMPAC aims to enhance interoperability and trust among 29 participating nations, featuring harbour phase activities like symposiums and sports, followed by sea phase exercises with diverse naval assets including ships, submarines, aircraft, and special forces.

A) INS Shivalik sailed into Pearl Harbour on completion of JIMEX 24, a bilateral exercise between India and Japan.
B) During the period of June 27 to July 7, the harbor phase of the exercise will involve engaging in various symposiums, conducting exercise planning discussions, participating in sports competitions, and exchanging reciprocal deck visits.
C) Divided into three sub-phases, the sea phase of RIMPAC-24 will involve ships participating in basic and advanced level integration exercises in the first two sub-phases.

Indigenous 4G Mobile Based Station Inducted By Indian Army
The Indian Army has advanced its communication capabilities with its first domestically produced 4G mobile base station by Signaltron, based in Bangalore. Enabled by the Government e-marketplace, this milestone underscores India’s progress towards self-sufficiency in critical technologies, enhancing both military communication and strategic autonomy.

Snowblind Malware
Snowblind, a recently discovered Android malware, utilises the “seccomp” security feature to circumvent anti-tampering protections implemented in banking applications. It modifies legitimate applications, allowing it to capture login information, bypass security measures like two-factor authentication, and view the user’s device remotely. Primarily active in Southeast Asia, Snowblind infects devices through untrusted app sources.

Viswanathan Anand Wins Leon Master’s For The 10th Time
Viswanathan Anand claimed his 10th Leon Masters title by defeating Jaime Santos Latasa 3-1 in the finals. Anand, a five-time world champion, showcased his skill over four games with a time control of 20 minutes per player. His victory highlighted his enduring prowess in the tournament he first won in 1996.
