25th Anniversary of Jahan-e-Khusrau Sufi Music Festival

The Jahan-e-Khusrau Sufi Music Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the event. The festival, organized by the Rumi Foundation and founded by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali in 2001, is an international platform dedicated to Sufi music, poetry, and dance. The event pays homage to Amir Khusrau, a revered disciple of Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya, who significantly contributed to Indian classical music and poetry. Sufism, which arrived in India in the 11th and 12th centuries, played a crucial role in shaping cultural and spiritual traditions. Various Sufi orders, including the Chisti, Suhrawardi, Naqshbandi, and Qadri, have influenced Indian spirituality, literature, and music. The festival also featured TEH Bazaar, a marketplace highlighting One District-One Product crafts from across India.

Cabinet Nod to Revised Waqf Bill (2024)

The Union Cabinet approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which includes key recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The bill aims to regulate and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards managing Muslim charitable endowments. The amendments strengthen the legal framework to prevent illegal encroachments on Waqf properties and improve administrative oversight. The JPC proposed including two Muslim women in state Waqf boards and one Muslim OBC member to ensure inclusive representation. The bill also mandates digital record-keeping of Waqf properties to enhance transparency. The establishment of separate Waqf boards for the Aghakhani and Bohra communities and the protection of women’s inheritance rights in Waqf properties are among the significant changes.

India Needs Tariff Cuts, Reforms to Boost Investments: WB

The World Bank’s latest report, “India Country Economic Memorandum,” highlights that India must accelerate reforms to achieve an average annual growth rate of 7.8% to attain high-income status by 2047. India’s GDP per capita has nearly tripled since 2000, with its share in the global economy doubling to 3.4% in 2023. The report emphasizes that reducing tariffs, increasing investments from 33.5% to 40% of GDP, and improving labor force participation are key measures to sustain high growth. Structural transformation through increased productivity, targeted job creation, and stronger financial sector regulations are also critical. The report urges India to emulate the economic strategies of Chile, Korea, and Poland, which successfully transitioned to high-income economies.

10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations Achieved Under Government Scheme

The government has achieved its target of forming 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) under a flagship central scheme launched in 2020. The scheme, with a budget of ₹6,865 crore, aims to empower small and marginal farmers by improving market access, ensuring better price realization, and providing financial support. Approximately 30 lakh farmers, including 40% women, are now linked to FPOs. These organizations function as legally registered entities that enable collective bargaining for better input procurement, storage facilities, and market linkages. The initiative addresses major agricultural challenges, including limited access to technology, high input costs, and poor financial security. However, regulatory complexities, weak infrastructure, and climate vulnerabilities pose challenges to the long-term success of FPOs.

Aditya-L1 Captures Unprecedented Solar Flare Details

The Aditya-L1 mission, India’s first dedicated solar observation satellite, has captured high-resolution images of a solar flare ‘kernel’ for the first time. Launched by ISRO in September 2023, Aditya-L1 orbits around the Earth-Sun Lagrange Point (L1), approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The mission aims to study the Sun’s outer layers and space weather impacts on Earth. Key scientific payloads, such as the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) and the High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS), have provided insights into the connection between solar flare brightening and plasma temperature increases. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of solar physics and the Sun’s influence on Earth’s atmosphere.

Additional Key Developments

The Battle of Karnal, fought in 1739 between the Persian ruler Nadir Shah and Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah, was revisited for its historical significance in accelerating the decline of the Mughal Empire. A major avalanche struck the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project in Uttarakhand, highlighting the increasing risks of natural disasters in mountainous regions. Research on Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), a medicinal plant, has surged by 376.5% over the past decade due to its immune-boosting properties. The United States introduced a “Gold Card” visa program for high-net-worth investors, replacing the EB-5 visa. China and Pakistan signed a cooperation agreement to train Pakistani astronauts for China’s Tiangong Space Station. Amazon unveiled ‘Ocelot,’ a prototype quantum computing chip designed to reduce error correction costs by 90%. The Madhya Pradesh government released 10 gharials into the Chambal River as part of conservation efforts for the critically endangered species. Lastly, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts hosted a discussion on “Diyaslai,” the autobiography of Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi, which chronicles his journey in fighting child exploitation.

India’s focus on economic growth, technological advancements, and social reforms continues to shape its trajectory towards becoming a global leader. Strategic initiatives in investment, agriculture, and scientific research will be crucial in ensuring long-term sustainable development.
