Urbanisation and Related Challenges

As cities grow rapidly, urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges. With around 40% of India’s population now living in urban areas, the pressure on infrastructure, housing, and services is immense. Urbanization in India differs from Western nations, where it followed industrialization. Here, it is often driven by economic distress, leading to overcrowded slums and inadequate urban planning.Key challenges include:

  • Outdated Urban Plans: Many cities still rely on old spatial plans that don’t account for current population growth.
  • Overcrowded Areas: Deindustrialization has displaced workers to peri-urban areas, where they live in substandard conditions.
  • Climate Change: Indian cities face severe pollution and are increasingly vulnerable to urban flooding and heat islands.
  • Waste Management: Rapid urbanization has resulted in increased waste generation, with many cities struggling to manage it effectively.

The government has launched several initiatives to address these issues:

  • Smart Cities Mission: Aims to promote sustainable cities through smart technology.
  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY): Focuses on providing affordable housing for the urban poor.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban): Promotes cleanliness and sanitation in cities.

  • High-Risk, High-Reward Approach: The scheme supports groundbreaking research with a global impact.

India’s Updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)

India has launched its updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2024–2030 at COP16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This plan aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and sets out 23 National Biodiversity Targets aimed at reducing biodiversity threats and promoting sustainable resource use.Key goals include:

  • Protecting 30% of land and marine areas by 2030 (the “30×30” target).
  • Reducing harmful subsidies by $500 billion annually.
  • Enhancing ecosystem resilience and species recovery through targeted conservation efforts.

The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will coordinate these efforts across India.
