The KAS Exam conducted by the Kerala PSC was done through three stages of assessment. They are:
1. Preliminary Exam
2. Main Exam
3. Interview
Preliminary Exam
Preliminary test will be only a screening test. The marks obtained in the preliminary examination are not considered for ranking. The Preliminary Exam is conducted in OMR mode. There are two exams generally conducted on a single day. They are Paper I and Paper II
Paper I is a General Studies 100 mark. The Maximum time allotted for this exam is 90 minutes. Major topics covered under Paper 1 are History (India and Kerala), History of the World (from mid-18th century), Cultural Heritage of Kerala, Indian Constitution, Public Administration, Political System, Governance, Social Justice and International Relations, Reasoning, Mental Ability & Simple Arithmetic and Geography.
Paper II has three parts such as Part I- General Studies, Part II- Language Proficiency Malayalam/ Tamil/ Kannada and Part III- Language Proficiency English. The Maximum time allotted for this exam is 90 minutes and is also of 100 mark. Important subjects covered und Paper II are Economy and Planning, Science and Technology, Environmental Science, Current Events Language Proficiency – English, Language Proficiency – Malayalam/ Tamil/ Kannada.
As the 1st phase of selection, a provisional probability list will be published by including the candidates who have secured top marks in the preliminary examination. The number of candidates to be included in the provisional list will be decided by the Commission.
Main Examination
Those who have Passed the Preliminary examination can attend Mains Examination. Main examination will be a descriptive type examination containing 3 papers of 100 marks each and 2 hours duration. Questions of Main examination will be provided in English. But the answers can be written either in English or in Malayalam.
Paper -I consist of History (India and Kerala), History of the World (from mid-18th century) and Cultural Heritage of Kerala. Paper -II contains Indian Constitution, Public Administration, Political System, Governance, Social Justice and International Relations, Science and Technology and Environmental Science. Paper -III consist of Economy and Planning and Geography.
Interview
The Interview is the final stage of the KAS examination. Those who have qualified the Mains exams are selected for the Final Interview. Interview panel consisted of PSC members, senior Civil Services Officers etc. The final mark is calculated on the basis of marks obtained in both Mains and Interview. Rank is published on the basis of this final mark.
